Visiting Music Teacher CPD, Exmouth

The second of our Autumn term Visiting Music Teacher CPD Days takes place at Ocean, Exmouth, EX8 2AY on Tuesday, 6 September 2022, As well as updates from the Hub team, our practical sessions will include:

  • Learn about RSL’s Exciting New Learning Platform with David Jones
  • A practical workshop on improvisation in instrumental and vocal lessons with Sam Massey
  • A practical workshop to develop your conducting and ensemble directing skills, whatever your previous experience with Paul Painter

These events are FREE to attend for Visiting Music Teachers working in Torbay and Devon with lunch and refreshments provided.

FREE Choral Workshop @ Stage Left, Paignton

Take your singing to the next level! Join expert vocal practitioners Elfyn Jones and Anthony Chamberlain for a FREE choral workshop for young singers aged 11-18, interested in being part of the brand new Devon Youth Choir.

Visiting Music Teacher CPD Day

Our next ‘in-person’ Visiting Music Teacher CPD Day takes place at Stage Left, Paignton TQ3 3HF on Monday, 6 June 2022. As well as updates from the Hub team, our practical sessions will include:

‘Being a Social Musician’ with Hugh Nankivell
Hugh Nankivell is based in Torquay and is one of the BSO’s (Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra) Music Associates. Throughout his career he has gained vast experience and knowledge of working as a Social Musician.

‘Introduction to Kodaly Method’  with Rebecca Willson
Rebecca Willson is a freelance musician and teacher and is the regional coordinator for the British Kodály Academy.

‘Making Sense of Autism’ with Paul Lamana
Paul Lamanna – Professional Lead for the Communication & Interaction Team with Babcock LDP and leads regional Autism Education Trust (AET) training programmes.

These events are FREE to attend for Visiting Music Teachers working in Torbay and Devon with lunch and refreshments provided.

The MIX 2022 (general public)

We are SO excited to confirm that The Mix, our annual festival for children and young people, will return on 17-18 June 2022! Having delivered The Mix for schools for many years, this year, for the first time, we’re delighted to open this well-loved event up to the general public, with FREE entry and parking at the National Trust’s Killerton Estate.

You can look forward to a packed day of live music performances and interactive workshops, guaranteed to enthuse and inspire children and young people (and their families!) about music, performance and creativity – the full line up is as follows…

Dust off your old instruments and join this creative music workshop with Matt Harrison, Emma Welton and ‘The Aubergines’ – the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s family orchestra based in Exeter – children, young people and their grown up are  welcome to take part (bring an instrument!) 12pm / 2pm / 4pm

  • All comers ‘Try An Instrument’ workshop for complete beginners, families and the general public – instruments provided and absolutely no experience necessary 1pm
  • Folk Tune Workshop – if you are already an instrumentalist and have been wondering about trying folk music, now is your chance! Come and learn a tune and join the band. Bring your own instrument or you can borrow one of ours – but you do need to know a little bit about how to play it (like, how to hold it and how to make a sound) 3pm

Workshops – interactive music workshops for children and young people (and those that works with them!) 

  • String Fever | Giles, Ralph, Graham and Neal are String Fever, “the world’s first genetically modified string quartet”. Using electric instruments to create their own unique sound, String Fever combine exceptional musical skill with a talent for engaging audiences, to create a performance that’s funny, frantic, and frenetic.
  • Ceilidh | Originating from the Gaelic word for ‘gathering’ or ‘party’, our ever-popular Ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee), led by Wren Music, will involve a fun-filled and interactive session of traditional music and folk dancing for all abilities.
  • Back Chat Brass | Rooted in pop, funk and hip hop, you’ll love the big, bold sound of this New Orleans-inspired brass group as you get down with their brassy beats. As Live Music Now artists, Back Chat Brass have toured the country, delivering educational performances for schools.
  • Body Percussion | Fun, creative, and engaging activities, suitable for all ages and experiences – join Beat Goes On for this high-energy STOMP-style body percussion workshop, exploring rhythms from around the world, without the aid of an instrument!
  • BSO Resound | As the world’s first disabled-led professional music ensemble, BSO Resound have gained high profile international attention for their ground-breaking performances and advocacy for equality, changing peoples’ perceptions of what disability is and what disabled people can achieve.
  • Let’s Play | Renowned music educators, Elfyn Jones and Kip Pratt from Sonopera, explore a plethora of playground and active/game songs in their own inimitable style, as part of this interactive vocal workshop.
  • Ukulele | Try your hand at the ukulele as David Gray guides you through the basics of learning this fun and accessible musical instrument.
  • Create & Sing | Step into the world of opera! Join Anthony Chamberlain as part of the Royal Opera House’s Create & Sing programme to explore Humperdink’s setting of the story of Hansel and Gretel.

Bitesize – shorter, taster workshops for children and young people (and those that works with them!)

  • Drum Devon | Explore the vast and wonderful world of drumming with James Carr from Drum Devon. Find out how on drum pattern managed to entrance the globe and spark iconic rhythmical movements all over, from West Africa to the Caribbean, USA, Brazil and back to Europe.
  • Outdoor Percussion | Our Music Station outdoor percussion set features xylophones, metallophones, chimes, and pipe drums and has been designed for use in your playground. Alfie Pugh will take you through the basics and then help you to explore this fun piece of equipment.
  • Music & Storytelling | Storytellers Kip Pratt and Chris Holland join the team from Devon School Library Service to explore how music can enhance a story.

Drop in activities and exhibitors (no booking required!)

  • Try your hand at DJing and music production with Sound Communities.
  • Have a go at bell ringing with the Guild of Devonshire Ringers.
  • Chat to Vicci and Emma from Daisi about what music means to you!

Taking place over two days at the National Trust’s Killerton Estate, admission on the Friday will be exclusively reserved for school groups and has now SOLD OUT.

Saturday is open to families and the general public and feature performances from county music groups and other Hub funded activities, as well as a huge range of interactive workshops for all the family.
